The reason the earth is called the blue planet is because of all of the water that is found on it. However, the majority of water on the planet is being polluted. By understanding some of the statistics, you can work to do something about the pollution in your area.
Pollution in the Oceans and Seas
Did you know that about 80 percent of the pollution in the oceans and seas comes from activities that take place on land? This means that you have the opportunity to control what goes into the water without stepping foot into the water. Whenever you use chemicals and other things that can run off into the water, think twice.
The more you educate yourself on the water pollution facts, the more you can do something about the water pollution. Even if you don’t live near the ocean or the sea, you can still make an impact. Knowledge is key. Find out what you can do in your area to help minimize the pollution that is going into the water.
Pollution in America’s Rivers
There are a lot of rivers in America. Many of them are too polluted to carry out such activities as:
– Fishing
– Swimming
– Basic aquatic life
This kind of pollution accounts for about 40 percent of the rivers in the country. There is a river protection group called American Rivers that is focused on trying to reduce the pollution threat. They aim to reduce the amount of runoff that comes from roads, parking lots, and even lawns in the neighborhood. They also try to reduce the runoff from farms, which includes fertilizers and pesticides. Logging and mining operations can also impact what goes into the rivers.
There are 1200 species of animals listed as endangered or threatened. About 50 percent of these depend on the streams and rivers in one capacity or another. To prove that we need to do something about the pollution, over 123 freshwater species throughout the 20th century became extinct – part of which had to do with pollution.
If you don’t think there’s a water pollution problem, look at the water pollution facts. It is an eye opening experience just to see how bad the pollution problem has gotten.
Other Water Pollution Facts
The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued warnings to say that the levels could reach the highest pollution levels that were seen in the 1970s by 2016 if everyone’s not careful. While there are regulations preventing this kind of water from being discharged, it still happens – some of it due to a lack of knowledge.
The facts about water pollution are hard to ignore. There are a lot of things going wrong and it’s all based on human error. We are to blame for the water problems in the United States and therefore we need to be the ones to fix the problem.

Matthew Reilly, a marine biologist and environmental writer, combines his passion for research with a mission to educate the public on water conservation. With over a decade of field experience, Matthew brings a wealth of knowledge and a unique perspective to the pressing issues of water pollution and ecosystem preservation.
